I am travelling to Thailand on the 20/6/13 with a return flight to London booked for 27/8/13, with plans to stay in Thailand for around 3 weeks and then cross the border to Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and then return to Thailand for 2 weeks before i fly home.
Do i need a visa for Thailand before i travel or will i receive it when i land?

You still don't say what country you hold citizenship with. If you are a Brit then Yes of course it can work, you will have no problem. Just make sure they stamp you correct each time you enter Thailand and your passport has at least 6 months remaining

Keep in mind that passport holders from countries that are eligible for a 30 day visa exemption receive 30 days when they fly into Thailand through an international airport. When entering Thailand through a land border, you get 15 days. You can also extend those stays at an immigration office in Thailand for an additional 7 days.
As long as you plan your stays according to the amount of days you receive when entering by air or land, it's no problem entering a few different times and no visa is necessary.

Among the many good answers, note a significant limitation in the Thailand rules and that is for people wanting to tour the SEA area, including several nations but passing back into Thailand often, Thai rules are a potential obstruction.
This limitation is built into Thailand "visa" rules and as more people want to tour all of SEA, Thailand will lose those who want to make it their base to return to several times. This will hurt Thailand's tourist friendly position and keep some travelers out of Thailand when they gladly would spend lots of time and money there.
The problem is the rule trying to stop people from "visa runs" whereby exiting the nation and coming right back in could allow stays in Thailand as a tourist for decades. To stop that practice and force foreigners to get more permanent permits to live in--not just visit--the nation Thailand now usually refuses the fourth such "renewal" of the 30-day entry permit. That gives tourists only three in-and-out trips to Thailand, which can limit the tourists wanting to use Thailand as a base to tour all of SEA.
It is funny how the rule of unintended consequences jumps up to bite people.

When you fly in you will receive 30 day visa exempt. When you leave whatever days you have left are cancelled.
When you fly back in you get another 30 day visa exempt, but if you return by land (without buying a visa) you will only get 14 days, for an extension of up to 7 days it will cost you 1,900 baht and time at your nearest Thai immigration office.
If I was using land transportation, I would make sure that I would only return no more than 13 days before my return flight.
I have done it 4 times on one trip, no problem. It only becomes a problem when you keep coming back and wanting maximum time and it looks like you are wanting to live there permanently without getting a proper visa.

you may not get a Thai Visa in united states of america, in basic terms on the Embassy and there is not any Thai Embassy in Thailand. In a 6 month era you may stay in Thailand ninety days as a vacationer. you will get a 60 day Visa till now you bypass OR in some unspecified time sooner or later you may bypass away Thailand and bypass to the Thai embassy in say Hong Kong, or Laos or Vietnam and persist with for a 60 day visa. on the border crossing (visa run) you may a 30 day stamp in spite of the undeniable fact that it not certainly a Visa (they call it a visa in spite of the undeniable fact that it relatively is certainly a visa exemption). My advice is to touch the community Thai embassy or consulate the place you're and tell them your plans and ask them the way you ought to acquire the records you decide on. The Embassy in Washington D.C. became very powerful. It took 2 days to get a Visa. i think of you ought to have the potential to what you % as long as you do not exceed ninety days in Thailand a 6 month era. (and then lower back you may likely get a ten day extension at an analogous time as waiting to your airplane yet do not anticipate it). additionally the high-quality for overstaying is 500 baht an afternoon. a great number of the individuals who get in problem gain this via fact they're attempting to tug one over on the government and stay longer than they're able or try to not pay the considered necessary volume to acquire the right facilitates.

See site below. you may stay in Thailand 30 days when entering by air. you may need to check with the consulate of Thailand since you would be staying a total of over 30 days...and i do not know if you get another 30 days when you re-enter or not.
